The Joomla! Project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Joomla 2.5.28. This is a maintenance release for the 2.5 series of Joomla! and is the final scheduled release of the series.

What does this mean for me?

End of support refers to when Joomla! no longer provides bug fixes, features, or security updates for a release. This is the time to make sure you have the latest available update of Joomla. Your website will continue to work as normal.

The Joomla! Project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Joomla 3.3.6. This is a maintenance release addressing issues with yesterday’s 3.3.5 release. This release addresses an issue related to the core update component, one regression in the user password reset process, and adds a fallback upgrade mechanism for the update component. This release is considered a security release since it includes two resolved security issues associated with 3.3.5. A 3.2.7 release is also available for users who are still using Joomla! 3.2 which addresses the security issues and the upgrade component bug.
If you are currently running a Joomla! release on a server with PHP 5.3.10 or later, we encourage you to update immediately to Joomla! 3.3.6 via either the one-click update or the update downloads available at http://www.joomla.org/download.html.
Note that in order to update directly to 3.3.6 via the core update component, you must be running 3.2.2 or later due to the raised minimum supported PHP version and the update system not supporting checking the server’s PHP version in older releases. Older 3.x releases will be prompted to update to 3.2.7 before being presented the 3.3.6 update.

Special Download Instructions

Because of the issue with the update component, users who are running 3.2.6 or 3.3.5 will be unable to update to the next release using Joomla's update component. These users will be required to update their Joomla! installation via the Extension Manager. Instructions for updating via the Extension Manager can be found on the Joomla! Documentation Wiki. Users who are running Joomla! 3.3.0 through 3.3.4 and 3.2.5 or earlier will be able to update using the update component. The Joomla! Documentation wiki contains full instructions on how to update your site.

Security ReleaseThe Joomla! Project is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Joomla 2.5.27. This is a maintenance release addressing issues with yesterday’s 2.5.26 release. This release addresses an issue related to the core update component. This release is considered a security release since it includes two resolved security issues associated with 2.5.26.

Special Download Instructions

Because of the issue with the update component, users who are running 2.5.26 will be unable to update to 2.5.27 using Joomla's update component. These users will be required to update their Joomla! installation via the Extension Manager. Instructions for updating via the Extension Manager can be found on the Joomla! Documentation Wiki. Users who are running Joomla! 2.5.25 or earlier will be able to update using the update component. The Joomla! Documentation Wiki contains full instructions on how to update your site.

2.5 End of Life Update

As previously noted, the 2.5 series will reach end of life at the end of 2014, which will mark the end of support for this series. At this time, we project that 2.5.28 will be the last scheduled maintenance release, due in approximately six to eight weeks, the typical timeframe between Joomla! releases.

Magento Expands its Cloud-Based Commerce Ecosystem with Microsoft and Joyent

Magento Expands its Cloud-Based Commerce Ecosystem with Microsoft and Joyent

eBay Enterprise, an eBay Inc., company, announced today that Microsoft Azure and Joyent are joining its Magento Hosting Partner ecosystem—further expanding the company’s global cloud-hosting solution options for retailers and brands. This expands the global footprint of Magento’s existing roster of partners who are delivering cloud-hosting solutions, including Rackspace and Peer1, to offer a greater choice among leading enterprise-class cloud infrastructure providers. As merchants look to create innovative, scalable customer experiences as part of their commerce strategies in 2015, cloud solutions are a natural choice because they offer faster time to market for new deployments, greater flexibility to scale capacity during peak periods, a global footprint to facilitate international expansion, and lower capital expenses.
“Our cloud partners provide access to cost-effective, scalable, and more secure infrastructure to retailers on a global scale,” noted Craig Hayman, President of eBay Enterprise, “which complements Magento’s unique worldwide developer network and their ability to deliver customized, innovative commerce experiences. Together, this powerful ecosystem allows merchants to have total creative control while also delivering solutions to fuel their growth.”
Today, thousands of Magento sites utilize cloud hosting to optimize their commerce operations. High growth retailers, such as fashion accessory brand Kendra Scott, rely on Magento platforms in the cloud to keep pace with brisk holiday sales. “I love the ability to easily expand during critical peak periods when we need the extra bandwidth and then just as easily turn that capacity off with our managed cloud solution from Rackspace,” said Tria Foster, Vice President of eCommerce and Loyalty for Kendra Scott Design.
Rackspace, a long-standing Magento Platinum Hosting Partner, delivers reliable, high performance managed services for the full Magento stack. This includes architecture guidance that increasingly takes advantage of the cloud’s ability to quickly respond to changes in customer traffic—a key benefit of deploying Magento platforms in the cloud for customers like Kendra Scott.
Delivering Premier Cloud-Hosting Solutions for Merchants
Magento Hosting Partners offer customers a choice of powerful, flexible, and reliable cloud-hosting solutions which can be tailored to support their needs in ways cookie-cutter platforms cannot. The addition of Azure and Joyent to the Magento Hosting Partner program signifies Magento’s leadership and continued focus on enabling virtually unlimited flexibility in both software and infrastructure options.
Microsoft Azure, a new Magento Platinum Hosting Partner, offers a complete platform so merchants can get everything they need from a single cloud solution. An open and flexible platform supporting any operating system, language, tool, and framework, Azure provides merchants more choice and control to help them move faster, do more, and save money.
“We’re excited to collaborate with Magento to deliver eCommerce solutions that meet the needs of the most demanding merchants,” said Vibhor Kapoor, Director of Product Marketing at Microsoft Azure. “Backed by the world-class experience of Microsoft, Azure blends an enterprise-proven, hybrid cloud with one-click setup and easy-to-use monitoring technology to provide Magento merchants a platform with the scalability, flexibility, and reliability to achieve global success.”
Joyent, a new Magento Silver Hosting Partner, offers a high-performance public cloud infrastructure purpose-built for fast-growing and innovative eCommerce companies who want to build reliable, resilient, and seamlessly scalable applications. Joyent has developed reference architectures that are pre-configured and optimized to specifically fit the needs of Magento merchants, and offer unprecedented ease-of-use, including pre-configured, push-button deployment. Also, Magento merchants benefit from Joyent’s container-based cloud, which offers exceptional performance and security for eCommerce applications.
“Partnering with Magento is a natural fit for Joyent. We share a common focus of delivering secure, scalable, and best-in-class solutions to merchants, for whom performance is paramount,” said Joyent CEO, Scott Hammond. “When you combine Joyent’s high-performance infrastructure capabilities with Magento’s industry-leading commerce software, companies get the flexible, cost-effective experience they need to be successful.”
More About Magento in the Cloud
Magento is also facilitating cloud deployments by supporting flexible, custom cloud pricing and by developing cloud-hosting educational resources for merchants. Pricing information can be obtained directly from the Magento sales team.
Details on the pros and cons of cloud hosting, as well as recommendations for using Magento platforms in the cloud, are available in a new whitepaper, “Understanding Magento Cloud Hosting,” posted at our Magento Cloud Information Site.
Magento merchants also benefit from a broad set of Technology Partners offering commerce tools and features optimized for use with Magento platforms, as well as an experienced network of Solution Partners who are well-versed in quickly deploying and scaling Magento platforms in the cloud to support rapid growth.
Magento at NRF
eBay Enterprise and Magento will be showcasing their technology solutions, including their cloud-hosted offerings, at the National Retail Federation Big Show January 11-13, 2015, in New York City at the Jacob K. Javitz Convention Center. eBay Enterprise and Magento will be located at booth #3163.

WordPress: DDoS attacks came from China

WordPress: DDoS attacks came from China

The large distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks that hit the WordPress.com blog publishing platform last week originated from China, according to the founder of the site.
A DDOS attack involves harnessing hundreds or thousands of computers to simultaneously bombard a web site with data so it becomes overwhelmed. The computers in such attacks have typically been infected with malware so they can be used without the consent and awareness of their owners.
The attacks, which brought slowdowns to the WordPress.com site, were severe enough to interfere with the company's three data centers in Chicago, San Antonio and Dallas. The site has since returned to normal as of Monday.
WordPress said last week the attacks might have been politically motivated and aimed at an unnamed Chinese-language blog, but it no longer has that view.
"Don't think it's politically motivated anymore," WordPress Founder Matt Mullenweg said in an e-mail to IDG News Service. "However the attacks did originate in China."
Mullenweg did not elaborate on the change in view or offer details on the source of the attacks.
The attacks directed "multiple Gigabits per second and tens of millions of packets per second" and were the "largest and most sustained" in its six-year history, Mullenweg previously said.
China has been frequently named as the country of origin for several major cyberattacks. Chinese hackers have been accused of launching cyber attacks to steal gigabytes of data from foreign energy companies, according to security vendor McAfee. In 2009, Google was also the victim of an attack that it alleged originated from China.
Very often the true source of a DDOS attack is unclear. While computers launching the attacks might be based in one country, they could be under control of hackers in a third country. Users at high risk of malware infections that can be used for DDOS attacks are those that don't run anti-virus software, don't keep their operating system updated or are running pirated operating systems that can't be updated.
The Chinese government has responded to these reports, saying it denies being involved in any cyber attacks. "The allegation that China supports hacking is groundless," a China foreign ministry spokesman said last month.

Beware the Machines: Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk Warn about the Rise of AI

Beware the Machines: Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk Warn about the Rise of AI
Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk have signed an open letter warning that more precautions need to be taken around the further development of artificial intelligence (AI).
The letter, which is backed by dozens of other scientists, entrepreneurs and investors, specifically states that there needs to be a greater focus on the safety and social benefits associated with AI.
The letter and an attatched research paper from the Future of Life Institute (FLI), which recommends how scientists should develop AI, come amid growing fears that machines are going to surpass the capabilities of humans in both the jobs market and many other areas of life.
It argues that scientists and technologists need to safely and carefully coordinate and communicate advancements in AI to ensure it does not grow beyond humanity's control.
"Because of the great potential of AI, it is important to research how to reap its benefits while avoiding potential pitfalls," the FLI's letter says. "Our AI systems must do what we want them to do."
The FLI was established last year by several volunteers, including Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn. It was set up to boost research into how AI will shape humanity's future, while also assessing the risks it presents.
Musk, the cofounder of SpaceX and Tesla, a member of the FLI's scientific advisory board alongside actor Morgan Freeman and world-renowned Cambridge University professor, Stephen Hawking, has previously said that uncontrolled development of AI could be "potentially more dangerous than nukes".
Experts at some of the world's biggest tech corporations - including from within IBM's Watson supercomputer team, Google, Microsoft Research and Amazon - have also signed the letter.
Other signatories include the entrepreneurs behind artificial intelligence companies DeepMind, which was acquired by Google last year, and Vicarious.
Last month Hawking told the BBC: "The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.
"It would take off on its own, and re-design itself at an ever increasing rate," he said. "Humans, who are limited by slow biological evolution, couldn't compete, and would be superseded."
While the letter raises concerns around the development of AI, it also points out that there are many benefits to be reaped if it is developed correctly.
"There is now a broad consensus that AI research is progressing steadily, and that its impact on society is likely to increase," the letter reads. "The potential benefits are huge, since everything that civilisation has to offer is a product of human intelligence; we cannot predict what we might achieve when this intelligence is magnified by the tools AI may provide, but the eradication of disease and poverty are not unfathomable."
Indeed, AI technology is already built into devices we use in our every day lives. For example, Siri, an intelligent personal assistant that sits inside iPhones and iPads is underpinned by AI developed by Apple, while Google's self-driving vehicles also rely heavily on AI. According to the FT, more than 150 startups in Silicon Valley are working on AI today.
The FLI warns that greater focus on the social ramifications of AI are necessary as the field attracts more investment and tech firms start to realise the rewards that can be obtained from creating self-thinking computers.
"Many economists and computer scientists agree that there is valuable research to be done on how to maximise the economic benefits of AI while mitigating adverse effects, which could include increased inequality and unemployment," writes the FLI in the paper.

Government to soon offer incentives to set up BPOs in small towns

Government to soon offer incentives to set up BPOs in small towns

Government will soon finalize a policy providing incentives to companies for setting up BPOs in small towns of the country, telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said.

"One of the things that I am engaged in is to have proper policy to have BPOs in small mofussil town of India with proper encouragement and incentives. That policy we are going to finalize," Prasad said while speaking at Global Business Summit.

He said the IT profile of India shows hubs in few limited cities like Gurgaon, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Vijaywada, Bengaluru and Mysore and this needs to be widened across the country, particularly in small mofussil towns.

"Once that happens, I see a lot of allied activities going to happen. I am writing to chief ministers for provisions of electricity and incentives. Once a BPO comes in small mofussil town of India, I see a different, IT-enabled India emerging, " Prasad said.

He said the Centre has plans to connect 2.5 lakh panchayats in three years which will fuel lot of business opportunities.

"I see a lot of business potential emerging because of optical fibre connectivity. Once these optical fibre connectivity is laid down, I see a pressure on governments to ensure electronic delivery of services. many state governments are doing but they need to improve," Prasad said.

The minister said the government is focussing on boosting electronics manufacturing in the country as in absence of corrective measures India's import bill could surpass oil import bill by 2020.

The Centre is providing incentives of Rs 25 on every Rs 100 spent by companies on electronics manufacturing and granting Rs 50 crore for every 50 acre of land given by state governments.

"We have received proposals worth Rs 19,000 crore from various companies in the field of electronics manufacturing," Prasad said.

The minister said he has travelled to countries known for electronics companies and met top officials of companies like Samsung, LG , Osram and Infineon, who have shown keen interest for manufacturing in India

"Electronics manufacturing proposal are coming. We have cleared Rs 5,000 crore worth proposals and rest are coming," Prasad said.
